About Me

Raquel Medina is a Mexican Canadian journalist and photographer from Edmonton, Alberta.

Over the last few years, Raquel has visited some of the world’s most diverse environments in search of stories. From the Amazon rainforest to the East African savannah, she tries her best to report from a place of fascination with the world around her.

Always with a camera by her side, Raquel loves to capture rich landscapes, wildlife, human portraits and the beauty of the natural world. Raquel reports on everything from politics and development to technology, science and conservation. She is most interested in writing about nature, environmental stewardship and human exploration.

Most recently, she assisted in producing a season of the podcast Nature Answers in partnership with Farm Radio International and the Media Institute of Southern Africa office in Zambia. As the 2025 recipient of the Bill McWhinney Memorial Scholarship for International Development and Journalism, Raquel was able to pursue an independent project in Rwanda where she reported on the novel use of artificial intelligence in mountain gorilla conservation.

She has a bachelor’s degree in political science and anthropology from the University of Alberta, and a master of journalism from Carleton University.

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."
